Signs you may be a good candidate
- You have noticed thinning or reduced density in the last few years, rather than long-standing bald patches.
- Hairs are still present but finer and shorter than they used to be (miniaturisation).
- You have male pattern or female pattern hair loss in its earlier stages.

Signs you may need a different approach
- Long-standing, shiny bald areas where follicles have been lost. Surgery may be the only way to restore coverage.
- Hair loss caused by an untreated medical condition (thyroid disorder, iron deficiency, hormonal imbalance) that needs to be corrected first.
- Scarring alopecia, where the follicle has been replaced by scar tissue.
- Active alopecia areata that needs specialist management.
- Blood clotting disorders, certain medications, active cancer treatment or pregnancy. The doctor will advise.
- Expectation of a guaranteed or dramatic result. No honest clinic can promise that.
What the doctor checks
- Pattern and stage of hair loss, often using the Norwood scale for men or the Ludwig scale for women.
- Scalp examination, sometimes with a dermatoscope to see miniaturised hairs.
- Medical history: family history, medications, recent illness, stress, diet and weight changes.
- Blood tests where appropriate to rule out treatable causes.
- Your goals, so the plan is built around what you actually want.
