Why it happens
During pregnancy, high oestrogen keeps more hairs in the growth phase, so you shed less. After delivery, hormones fall and those hairs move into the resting phase together, then shed a few months later. This is a form of telogen effluvium. It is not pattern hair loss and the follicles are healthy.
What helps
- Time. Most women see recovery within a year.
- Adequate protein, iron and overall nutrition, especially if breastfeeding.
- Gentle handling: avoid tight styles and harsh chemical treatments.
- Checking iron, thyroid and vitamin D if shedding is heavy or prolonged, since pregnancy commonly affects these.
Where exosome therapy fits
Usually it does not, at least not initially. Because postpartum shedding is self-limiting, we do not recommend paying for regenerative scalp treatment for it. The exception is when shedding unmasks underlying female pattern hair loss that persists after the postpartum period, which a dermatologist can diagnose. In that case, options including exosome therapy may be discussed once you have finished breastfeeding.
When to see a doctor
- Shedding continues beyond twelve months after delivery.
- You notice visible thinning on top or a widening parting.
- You have other symptoms such as fatigue, cold intolerance or irregular periods.
